Itchy Coo Park, Builth Wells
We could not turn up until Saturday afternoon as we had to go via Cardiff for a local family history talk and street party, where I was able to give some damsels a ride around Roath Park Lake on the TV. Got the tent up in the lower field and spoke to Dave Blumfield on the phone who I think was in a pub in Builth, and never got out of it as did not see him at the Small Fakers but saw Richard Evans and his brother. Richard was dancing well but the tarmac floor was well sticky by Saturday night.
‘Ere we all are standing in a cow shed’ sang the Fakers as they ran through their set including, Nut Ogden Flake with Lazy Sunday for an encore. Great to hear that music but it wasn’t for dancing to, was it Richard ?
Gerry from Cardiff camping next to us had broken down on the way to Builth on his immaculate
Li Series 3 in pale blue and got recovery to the campsite, his wife Danielle following behind in the car. On the Sunday morning we took his scooter outside the Builth 3 mile limit in my Espace so he could get recovered back to Cardiff. I hope he made it – electronic ignition problem. Then Rebecca and I went on the ride out to Llanwrtyd Wells about 14 miles away, but only about 25 scoots. Many had already left to ride home Sunday morn. The pub at Llanwrytd (renamed for the occasion) would have been dead without us – blimey it’s a bank holiday weekend and the sun is shining in Wales !
Gerry also loved his dancing and Rebecca commented that most of the guys there had shaven heads so were they all 'bovver boys' when 18 and where were all the Mods?
Was I the only one with a beard and what had happened to Dave Blumfield who called her Akela when they met last year as she had been his son’s Cub Leader.

The Baker of Builth
And the story begins…
Myself, Dave Blumfield, Steve Newell, Stuart Raine and soon to be member Corin Crane set off early from The Red Barn to meet up at Church Stretton with four other scoots from Telford Tigers and Lads ‘N’ Lasses for the 50 odd mile scenic jaunt to Builth Wells. No break downs and not even a fuel stop could get in our way on what was a very enjoyable spin.
Once ensconced in our various B&B’s (and campsite for Stu the Mod cos he’s hardcore) we headed straight to the local antiques shop (this bit is actually true of Blum and Newelly, the rest of us went to the pub…). Dave found himself a nice jacket for a fiver while Newelly came away with a willow patterned plate-don’t ask!!!
The afternoon was spent drinking and catching up with friends old and new in the various hostelries of Builth. We then took the rather arduous uphill stroll to the main site for the ‘do’. I can't actually remember much about the band that night so I can only assume they weren't fantastic! We left there in the early hours and headed back into the town for a nightcap (about 5 double JD’s in my case, ouch!).
After a much needed hearty fry up Saturday morning we jumped on the scoots and popped back to the main venue to check out the parts fair and custom show. It was here we first bumped into Lem, Sam, Carl Perry, Evo and a few others who had ridden down Saturday morning. We then went for a ride out to the very beautiful Elan Valley and called in for a pint in Rhayader on the way back.
Saturday afternoon was again spent mingling with likewise folk in and around the pubs. We gave the ‘do’ a miss that night in favour of a Ruby Murray and headed off to bed about midnight in preparation for the early ride home the following morning.
An uneventful ride back to Shrewsbury after another cracking rally in Builth and for the second year running the sun shone on the righteous! A brilliant turn out by the club with the number of members attending into double figures. This really is a good rally and is fairly local for us so let’s hope they have another here again in 2012.
The fly splattered scoot has now had its post-rally wash and polish in preparation for the next eagerly awaited rally weekend.
